What NOT To Do After Seeing A Chiropractor

You’ve just gone to the chiropractor and all the kinks and aches and pains are worked out. You feel amazing, your range of motion is improved, and you feel relaxed. In other words, you feel amazing! While you might want to jump back into working out or other activities you enjoy in your daily life, take it slow. After an adjustment, you might experience some tenderness as your body moves into its correct positions.  

The steps you take next can have a big impact on how effective your adjustment is. Here are our tips on what NOT to do after your chiropractic adjustment:  

Don’t Skimp On the Water  

When you receive a chiropractic adjustment, your muscles and bones are moved and stimulated, which in turn releases toxins into your body (this also happens when you get a massage). To adequately flush these toxins from your body, you want to drink a nice refreshing glass of water immediately after your adjustment.  

Continue to drink ample water for several days after your adjustment which will help your body function properly, and allow your bone and muscles to stay correctly in place. Not only is drinking water important after a chiropractic adjustment or massage, but it’s also a great habit to make part of your daily routine.  

Drink more water to stay healthy and say goodbye to dehydration headaches, fatigue, and muscle weakness! 

Don’t Stay Sedentary  

After an adjustment, you don’t want to go back to doing the things that got your body out of alignment in the first place. Avoid sitting for long periods of time and if possible, go for a long walk or a bike ride after seeing a chiropractor.  

If you are headed back to work, take the stairs, or use that standing desk if you have one! Anything you can do to keep your body moving will help keep your body in alignment and prevent your body from reverting back into a bad position.  

Staying active after an adjustment aids the healing process. Try some other low-impact activities such as yoga, swimming, Pilates, or tai chi! These can help shorten your healing time after a visit to the chiropractor.  

Don’t Forget About Your Posture 

Unfortunately, one chiropractic adjustment won’t fix years of pain from incorrect posture! You may be able to feel the difference in your posture after an adjustment, so if you evaluate your daily positions and activities, you should be able to create new healthy postures and movements that will keep your body in alignment.

Don’t Overdo It  

Yes, it’s great to stay active after an adjustment, but that doesn’t mean you should jump right back into heavy lifting or other strenuous activities. Don’t overdo it.  

If you been injured at the gym or in a car accident, you’ll certainly want to watch your activity after an adjustment. We don’t want you to potentially reinjure yourself because you feel better after a chiropractic visit. 

Try to avoid any jerky or quick movements as this can revert your body back to where it was. After an adjustment, your body has to relearn how to stay in the correct positions, so be mindful of how you are sitting, the movements that you make, and any exercise that you do for the next day or so after an adjustment. 

Don’t Stop Following Your Plan 

If you are recovering from an injury or went in for a chiropractic adjustment due to chronic pain, your chiropractor will come up with a treatment plan to help your body heal. To fully enjoy the benefits of chiropractic care, follow the plan, and take it seriously.  

Even if you feel better after your first visit, there is still work to be done. If your chiropractic doctor sends you home with stretches or exercises to do, do them! Keep your appointments, get ample rest, and follow the treatment plan that your chiropractor creates for you.
